This song was inspired by the black arts movement in Jackson, Mississippi, which for me centered on a musical collective called E.B. & Company, headed by saxophonist Ezra Brown. When I was 17, I would stay past midnight at The Living Room downtown, as the crowd left and the music grew freer and freer, often incorporating African percussion. I played with Ezra and Chris Alford once outdoors in downtown Jackson, and had my first out-of-body musical experience. A different music here, but inspired by that. I also meditated on music in my closet gazing at candle light at this time :)

Lyrics

music from the flame
a candle in my mind
right near Capitol Street
where the Company lit the light

A ray is transcending all material
an idea, a feeling will convey
a reason, exceeding all that I know
in the dream, where it goes

I am tied to the door
of a house, put on fire
and like back in the day
I’m gazing at the flame

A ray is transcending all material
an idea, a feeling will convey
a reason, exceeding all that I know
in the dream, where it goes

like a moth to the flame
