HIGHER POWER HOUR w/Arron Merat
Pilot Episode: The Institute for Divine Metaphysical Research
The American Museum of Paramusicology (AMP) is proud to present the pilot episode of UK journalist Arron Merat's "Higher Power Hour," an audio series which explores humanity's transcendental relationship with sound. This debut episode focuses on the Institute for Divine Metaphysical Research, a long-running but little-known American metaphysical community founded by Henry Clifford Kinley in Los Angeles, California in 1931. IDMR is a predominantly African-American branch of Christian theosophy and the Sacred Name movement, guided by the visionary teachings of its founder. Merat's well-produced show features original interviews with IDMR members, including Kinley's grandson, Jason Kinley, and musician Jerome Ali, a former member of Parliament/Funkadelic. Amidst interviews and brief commentaries, Merat offers a broad survey of IDMR music, from their earlier congregational recordings to more recent IDMR-inspired hip hop. Known for the dazzling visuals of their teaching charts, the IDMR have yet to be truly listened to. I hope this episode of the Higher Power Hour introduces you and many others to the inspired voices of IDMR history.

The AMP archive contains some very rare IDMR materials, including a 1st edition of Kinley's sacred text, a later promotional pamphlet, and two out of print LP's of IDMR congregational music. The AMP was happy to provide research information and digitized tracks from these LP's for Merat's production.
An extremely rare first edition of Clifford Kinley's sacred text, "God The Archetype (Original): Pattern of the Universe," from the AMP's IDRM Collection.
